Images: Set images are typically from European or US catalogs, although boxes and instruction books are used when there is no suitable catalog image, which is now occuring more frequently. Every thumbnail links to a full size image. with the source listed. The size of the images is listed to the right. All images are used in accordance with the Lego Fair Play policy.

Set numbers: Technic sets can have different set numbers for the same set (852 Helicopter, 954 Sky Copter), different set numbers for different versions of the same set (8428 or 8432 Turbo Command), or different sets with the same number (8858 Auto Engines, 8858 Rebel Wrecker). Sets have a separate entry for each of their possible set numbers.

Set names: Names are listed alphabetically by market using the ISO-3166 2 character country code (1). The year is listed primarily to show when a name in a given market changed, it does not necessarily indicate the release date of the set. Although expanded from previous versions of the Index, the list of names is by no means complete.

Starting in 1998 with the Mindstroms sets, Lego began standardizing the set and subtheme names in all markets to a single English name. This process now includes everything execpt for several of the accessory and promotional sets. These names are not indicated by a market.

Piece counts: Piece counts listed on US boxes and US Shop at Home catalogs are considered official counts. Inventories from new sets or piece counts from instructions are considered approximate.

Paper sizes: Most Lego instruction books are ISO-216 standard paper sizes (2).
