A LEGO set number is usually the best starting point for identifying a Technic model, but it is not always the whole answer. Early products may have different European and US numbers, catalogs may use alternate names, and broad Technic indexes may include anything from a complete vehicle to a motor or beam pack.

The number alone therefore cannot establish that an item is a complete construction model. A secondhand lot described as “Technic set 877” should be evaluated as a steering-parts package, not as an unidentified vehicle with missing instructions.
