Lego MurstenIn 1954 the Automatic Binding Bricks were renamed "Lego Mursten", Danish for masonry. The new name reflected the emphasis on architectural models. About this time the bricks changed to include a new script 'dogbone' logo on the underside. |

A System of Play: |
This same year, Godtfred Kirk Christiansen, Ole's son and now the managing director, began creating a concept or system around the bricks where not only could bricks be used interchangeably but the sets could be used together as well. The result, introduced in 1955, was the LEGO System i Leg - the Lego System of Play. It consisted of 28 sets and 8 H0 (1:87) scale vehicles. Each set could be used together to create a large town plan. |

The concept of an interchangable system has formed the basis of Lego marketing to the present day. It was the first breakthrough for the Lego brick. In 1956 the bricks changed again. The script Lego logo was finally molded on the studs themselves. Additionally the large block logo was on the underside of at least some of these bricks. |

With all of these conceptual improvements the bricks still did not sell particularly well, especially outside of Scandinavia. It would take one more improvement until Lego would take off. |
